Can Crypto Prediction Markets Become a Core DeFi Primitive?

Prediction markets used to sit on the fringe of crypto. Niche, speculative, and often dismissed as glorified betting.

That perception is now outdated.

Over the past two years, Polymarket has quietly transformed into one of the most important information markets in crypto, and potentially one of the most misunderstood.

In 2024 alone, Polymarket processed roughly $9 billion in volume, driven largely by macro events, elections, and financial outcomes. But volume alone is not the story. What matters is who is paying attention now.

In October 2025, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owner of the NYSE and a cornerstone of global market infrastructure, committed $2 billion to Polymarket. This was not a speculative crypto bet. It was a strategic move into probability as a data asset.

Why prediction markets matter more than polls

During the 2024 US presidential election, Polymarket’s probability markets consistently outperformed traditional polling aggregates.

Two weeks before the election, Polymarket’s pricing had already resolved outcomes in key swing states that polls still labeled as toss-ups.

Prediction markets force participants to put capital behind beliefs. That economic pressure filters noise, removes social bias, and updates in real time as information changes. Markets do not care about narratives. They care about incentives.

For institutions, this has profound implications. Probability is not just an opinion, it is also an input.

From betting venue to financial infrastructure

Polymarket is no longer just a consumer-facing platform.

Its hybrid architecture combines an off-chain central limit order book with on-chain settlement, enabling tight spreads, deep liquidity, and institutional-grade execution while preserving transparency and collateral guarantees.

More importantly, Polymarket’s probabilities are now being treated as data.

With ICE distributing Polymarket’s event probabilities to institutional clients, prediction markets begin to resemble a new layer of market intelligence, sitting alongside rates, volatility, and macro indicators.

In this framing, Polymarket starts to look less like a product and more like infrastructure.

A DeFi primitive hiding in plain sight

On-chain prediction markets unlock composability that traditional betting platforms never could.

Polymarket outcomes can be used as:

  • Oracles for DeFi protocols

  • Hedging instruments for macro and regulatory risk

  • Inputs for lending rates, derivatives, and structured products

  • Synthetic exposures to real-world events

This is where the thesis becomes interesting.

If probability markets become reliable, composable, and liquid, they can function as a foundational primitive in decentralized finance, similar to how price oracles enabled lending and derivatives.

Not every prediction market will get there. But the path is now visible.

The risks are real

Wash trading remains a material concern. Regulatory clarity at the federal level does not eliminate state-level challenges. Oracle design introduces trust assumptions. Competition from regulated, fiat-native players like Kalshi is intensifying.

There is also no native token today, and future token economics will determine whether value accrues sustainably or leaks to users and market makers.

The question we explore

The full research report does not ask whether Polymarket is popular.

It asks something more fundamental:

Can crypto prediction markets evolve into core financial infrastructure, or will they remain event-driven speculation tools?

We analyze this through:

  • Market structure and liquidity behavior

  • Institutional incentives behind ICE’s involvement

  • Academic evidence on prediction accuracy

  • DeFi composability and oracle design

  • Regulatory pathways and failure scenarios

  • Bull, base, and bear outcomes over a 5 to 10 year horizon

Our goal is simple: give long-term investors institutional-grade crypto research without the noise, hype, or short-term trading bias.

For free readers, this post is your window into the thesis. If prediction markets do become foundational, the implications extend far beyond Polymarket itself.
